Hey Sturm,
i had the very same problem some time ago. Random BSODs. Sometimes few minutes after starting my PC up, sometimes only after 1-2 hours.
It was the RAMs!!!
I would place my bet on the same for you.
Now for the new system: i was an AMD junkie as well. Then last December i had a major PC meltdown. It was the PSU. Had to get me a new MoBo, CPU, RAMs, PSU and while i was at it a ATI 38xx 
.
The CPU is:
Intel Core 2 Duo E7300 @ 2.66GHz
I have been told you can overclock easily to 3gig even. Runs extremely kewl (35C!), bleeding fast, best bang for the buck if you ask me.
