After doing the training missions yesterday in easy mode, started again today full real in the Spad and 3/4 of the way through.
To start the Spad,
1 Throttle to idle
2 Set fuel mix to rich
3 Radiator open
4 Start engine (make believe you have a squadie yanking on the prop)
5 Allow temp and oil pressure to rise for 2 minutes
6 Decrease fuel mix until engine runs "sweet" and no discernable needle judder in the rpm counter
Then hold on as you accelerate as the tail swings to the left, easy rudder to straighten up and keep the nose straight, pull back on the stick at 90 to 100 kph.
Easy !!
Best way I have found to navigate is to look at the mission briefing screen then using pen and paper copy landmarks on the way to where the target is and also the target area, crossroads nearby or river or oddly shaped wood etc.
No Tomtom here lads!
You can use the in game map but it is difficult to zoom in and out when flying unless you press P to pause the sim.
I am sure someone will make some WESTERN FRONT pdf maps available soon for navigation.
The first training mission gets you flying through loops firstly ahead then side to side. The second lets you take off from your base,Gengoult near Toul, F.8. are the co-ordinates on the map you get with the game, fly a circuit and land. The third gets you to enter a stall at 800 meters and you obviously have to pull out! If you check subtitles box in the mission set up screen it will tell you what to do (push stick away and right rudder to enter stall etc).
The fourth mission you take off and fly by landmarks to attack a German observation balloon about 1/2 a kilometer the other side of the lines.
Did I mention flack !!On your way over the lines and on the way back you have to zig zag and watch your oil pressure and water temp if you fly full throttle.
My take so far ? It needs a bit of polish but didn`t IL2 need it when it was released? A lot of people on SimHQ are using IL2 as it is now as a benchmark to compare RoF which you just can`t do in my opinion.Give it a chance.
If you want the thrill of the wind blowing through your hair then put a oscillating fan next to your monitor, get a pair of goggles from someware and dont forget the castor oil, fly this sim and you will be back in 1918 !
