This is the kind of decision that is nearly impossible to reverse. My thought was that Dan should only be retained if he won the BWT (1 of 17 would be completely inadequate). In my view (and it is all speculation), the emotion of Coach getting non-renewed seems (according to the players own words) to be the catalyst of winning the BWT. So, the timing meant that we won the BWT and get a shot at NCAA glory. I will take it. I don't think you can put this genie back in the bottle. But, it is a win-win. Long Beach gets a moment of glory, Monson gets to go out on a high note, and winning will get him some consideration for a new job.
The difficulty is that going to the NCAA is the kind of thing that can renew interest in the program, and were the core coming back next year, would also carry over into attendance next year. Unfortunately, I expect we will lose most if not all of the core of the Traores, Jones and George. All will have nice options. They deserve the shot at NIL money, but I think staying together could really be better for their careers
I never expected the school to retreat. Everyone needs to move in a new direction. We somehow need to get attendance up.
This wasn't even in the realm of possibility outside of some media folks stirring up the pot (on purpose)... Why we're even having to talk about this is crazy lol.
Smitheran confirmed that as well before.
Dan gets his departure on a high note, program moves on. Period (and the program gets a new direction and new energy).
GO BEACH
Long Beach State Men’s Basketball HC Dan Monson will not get his job back despite a March Madness run, according to an athletic department spokesperson, who says the “decision was made with a possible postseason run in mind.”
