* Base level: Managing access to student athletes by brands/businesses/etc. for NIL deals (not unlike any other entertainer/pro athlete getting a commercial deal - ambassador/spokesperson/endorsement/etc.). Part of that is having things in place to ensure compliance + some power schools have programs in place to further support the student athlete educating them on key things. (looks like LB at least has a portal: https://longbeachstate.com/news/2023/9/27/general-long-beach-state-athletics-to-partner-with-inflcr-exchange-to-boost-nil-access)
This in general is where the most marketable athletes will earn: commercial deals = those with big followings (again, just like any pro athlete/entertainer... that's why someone like Bronny James, who has done little on the court, gets a big deal. His following = marketing value.). One of my professional activities is part of an athlete/sports management firm: these deals are not much different from regular marketing deals between our pro athletes and brands.
* The collectives are ways to pool funds from donors, sponsor brands, etc. to help take care of the teams (spread funds across the teams - whether for basic things like living expenses, family travel, etc.) - and what BBBeach said is true on the community service part (again, a good example is MESA Foundation at SDSU - which has a strong community service component).
LB State Men's Volleyball has a collective.
That's why it would be good to hear about Smitheran's strategy moving forward.

NIL money is not administered by the school. Schools do not pay for likeness. Most school create cooperatives where money is pooled and administered by the group. However, coaches tell cooperatives who to pay and how much. Players have or perform some service usually charity activities so the members can count their donation as a tax deduction. Other NIL are contracts between players (usually a representative or family member) and for commercials or product advertisements like Nike, insurance etc. QB Williams at SC had about 12 contracts. I wonder how many Cartland Clark has for her $3.5 million.
Will the schools be asking donors to donate to school athletics and separately to donate NIL money?
