although I doubt it. This letter was sent to me by my dad in PA, who cut if from the paper. It's NOT graphic and has a happy ending and is good to know there are other people like us in the world.
"On Feb. 11, with the wind chill well below zero, a young cat was found trying to huddle in a corner to escape the cold. Luckily, it was found by a person who knew me. It is fair to say, based on her condition, the cat would probably not have survived until morning.
She was hypothermic, hungry and obviously acquainted with humans. Calls to area vets, the SPCA, and inquiries with people in the area yielded no clues. The cat had likely been abandoned, away from its home and there wasn't anyone looking for her.
She is beautiful, a mostly white calico and very affectionate. It is almost impossible to understand how anyone could be so cruel as to put her out in the dead of winter. From her appearance and demeanor, it was clear that she had not been on the streets more than a few days.
In the event the former owner might read this, I want you to know that she visited a vet on Feb. 13. She was tested for leukemia and feline AIDS and thankfully doesn't have either. She was given shots, wormed, treated for fleas and she has an appointment on Feb. 28 to be spayed. Our vet said she's about 1 year old.
If this cat had been adopted out from the SPCA, she would have been micro-chipped and spayed. She wasn't. The poor, lovely creature was, most likely, the result of an unplanned litter born to a cat that belonged to another irresponsible owner.
Please have your pets spayed or neutered. If for any reason you cannot keep your pet, please have the decency to surrender it to an animal rescue group or the SPCA. Yes, the shelter has to put far too many animals to sleep for lack of homes, but an injection that slips a pet peacefully from one life to the next is more merciful than freezing to death, dying of starvation or worse, the slow and agonizing death that is the result of lack of proper immunizations.
This cat happened to be in the right place at the right time and hadn't been a stray long enough to have developed fear of humans. Far too many aren't as lucky.
