Does anyone else's cat do this/Do you know what it means?

Almost every time Glory goes to drink water, she first "paws" over the surface as if she's brushing aside some sort of covering. Considering that it's a dish of clean, fresh water, there's nothing for her to be pawing aside! I figure it's got to be some sort of inherited instinctual behavior, but darned if I can think what useful application that kind of a behavior might have had in the wild!
