I was at Petsmart on Saturday. Got there just when they were packing up from adoption day. They had lots of kittens, all adorable. Watching them pack up, fold crates, load the car reminded me of how much work it is.
I've had to turn down people who wanted to adopt. One family bought out Petsmart - cat beds, food, toys you name it - and then mentioned the cat was going to live in an unheated garage. When pigs fly.
The most poignant adoption story I have is a woman who saw a cat named Vicky, a gray tiger, and fell in love with her. Vicky was sleeping, curled around her brother, a kitten named Pete. The woman saw them cuddled up, burst into tears, couldn't bear to separate them and took them both home. Turned out she had a brother named Pete who'd died. They got a great home. Woman and her husband were dentists with a big house and a lot of love to give.
