heartworm

Hi. I am new to your site.I have a question, I have 7 inside cats. I have been feeding a stray for 3 months, I took it to the vet.He said the cat is heartworm positive, he said it would die in a couple months. He did one blood test. I asked if this cat could live with the others, he said absolutely not. But everything I've read says it is not contagious, does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks. Jackie
