my sister in PA was feeding a stray (friendly) tortie kitten and the neighbors started giving her a very hard time about the kitten in their yard, garden, etc. At the time my sister had a very sick pom she was taking c/o, driving an hour once a week for treatment and her time was filled with caring for this sick dog (for over a year). Winter was upon them so she took the kitten to the local SPCA. She & my mom visited it and she told them EXPLICITLY if she doesn't get adopted within the 3 mon. period, to call her. Left all her contact info. A couple weeks later she went to visit the kitten again. No kitten. She thought it was adopted & they didn't call her. When she inquired and they looked it up, she learned it was PTS. It contracted a URI. Too contagious for the shelter to deal with. My sister was devasted. Cried for weeks. What a senseless horrible waste. This shelter really blows and it's all they have locally, although in the past couple yrs a couple cat rescue groups have come on the radar screen, people like us recognizing the need to step up and turn things around when the only choice in town is a death camp.
