Butchie used to get scabs around the size of quarter. He had them for years. They never seemed to bother him. The vet shaved him once. Didn't make much difference. The vet gave me a topical med to put on the scabs. Didn't make much difference. A few years ago, they disappeared completely. Go figure.
Chloe was getting irritated bald patches. I figured out she was over grooming due to nervousness. Now that she's found a safe haven living in my office, they disappeared.
It doesn't sound like fleas, Mike. For one thing, if you had fleas, all the cats would be effected. I had fleas in my house once. My poor little dog was biting and scratching herself raw. And my ankles were being bitten. I had to bomb the place to get rid of them but my point is that fleas are pretty obvious to "diagnose" based on the fact that you can see them (have you combed Buddy with a flea comb?) and by their effect.
Have you tried washing those sore spots with a mild soap and warm water to remove whatever the irritant is (if there is one)? You could apply pure aloe vera but you'd have to watch to make sure he doesn't lick it off. It's only mildly toxic but cats are small so mildly toxic can be a bigger problem for a cat.
