So I went downstairs this morning prepared to see anything. Didn't see anything. When I woke up Ruby was on the bed, incredibly tired after such vigilance. I fed both the cats like normal, they ate like normal.
I sat down at the computer and soon noticed Ruby hunched down next to the loveseat in the "dining" room (really more of a library). We have a collapsible cat crate there we put up when Sammi had the biopsy on the cyst next to her eye; we thought she'd like sitting without the collar. But she freaked out so we never used it. Of course, being us, it's still set up there. So Ruby's in front of if looking intensely at something.
Something that looked like dryer lint. Except it had a tiny nose, tiny ears, tiny eyes, and tiny paws. A very small young black furry mouse just about the size of the toy furry mice these guys love. It was really too adorable. It didn't seem very concerned, but maybe it was just too young to know better.
I decided to let nature take its course, and since Ruby and Sammi could not get past the crate nature decided to let the mouse slip back into whatever crack it came out of. That part of the dining room is on the opposite wall to the stove, which is where I found Ruby and Sammi hovering after failing to secure their prey next to the cage.
I have a bad feeling about opening the built-in drawers in the built-in cupboard on the wall behind the stove. Nice warm dry quiet space . . .
I'm going to buy some humane trap-n-release mousetraps. Any of you have suggestions as to brands, models, or just other ideas about our mouse problem? I put a call into some service in MA I saw that deals humanely with rodents, but they haven't called back yet.

I got it at Home Depot, I think, for what I thought were mice in the garage (turned out to be shrews). The first one I caught I was able to safely release. The second one died in the trap. I felt horrible. Won't use it again.

I use this one because it is mesh there is lots of air. The other one posted here I checked it before bed and it was empty and by morning the mouse was dead.
Panic plus not airy enough I guess. I tried it once more with the same result so I pitched it and got the have a heart one from Lee Valley.

The trap I pictured is one I have, but did NOT use for the reasons you state, plus I thought it was unreliable after I attempted to make it work a few times on my own.
I did get another one and this is the one I used. It's quite large, with lots of room and air can get in easily. I put food in it, so the mouse was okay until I found it.
I'm sorry - my memory just doesn't work anymore.

It had a big yellow sticker on the bottom and we had the same problem. I think part of our problem is the place we were trapping them was above the laundry tubs between the ceiling tiles and the subfloor of the main floor.
We have taken a lot of the tiles down so it's all open on the one side, but the pipes and heat vents are up there.
From what I read mice cannot go very long without water and just overnight can kill them if it's very warm.
We once got 18 in one day when they were tearing houses down on the next block. - thank you! msg

Little deer mouse who was a guest for awhile got loose in my house. The trap in the link is what I used, very successfully. I put a few seeds outside the trap and several leading into the trap.
Mousie was released when weather conditions improved.
Owen still hasn't forgiven me for "steeling" his mowsie.

caught one by cornering it & putting a shoebox over it, slid a piece of cardboard under it and transferred him outside the front door (my backyard is cat-proofed).
Does your cat carrier have a grill on the front that mousie could fit through with the door closed? If you put food in there and mousie takes the bait, you'd soon hear about it as the kitties rattle the crate. - if i thought i could be fast enough . . . msg

to use the box method, i'd try it. but the mice are also in small places and are nearly impossible to see, let alone catch, when they run out in the open.
hmm, crate idea is interesting, but wouldn't that run the risk of the mouse running right back out and the cats catching it?

I'm sorry, Karen, I'm sitting here laughing. I don't think there's much you really CAN do, until morning anyway. And I'll bet Ruby solves your problem before that, if she gets half a chance.
The last time I had a mouse in the house I got lucky. Well, as lucky as one CAN be with a mouse in the house. Ivy caught it and had it in her mouth when I saw her. Ivy's semi-feral, so when I jumped out of my chair she ran into the bathroom, where she dropped her prize. It ran into the corner. My bucket was upside down in the tub, where I'd left it to dry when I mopped the floor earlier in the day; I grabbed the bucket and managed to catch the mouse between the bucket and the side of the tub, and I just tilted the bucket up to catch the little guy. I walked him across the street and down a way, then let him go.

i was actually laughing myself, in between getting vaguely freaked out. i mean, it's not the end of the world. it's not cockroaches or centipedes.
ruby'll probably sleep all day tomorrow. and thank you for passing the word along!!
