I even urged him to look over the alley cats site and look up some shelters and rescue groups in his area. I told him that both he and Sammy's owner are very irresponsible. I hope he'll do a follow up. - Regardless. Of Consequences..

because they KNEW they would get blasted for doing the surgery, but I am positive that the cat was brought in as a feral, because the vet tipped the ear. For that matter, the vet PROBABLY knows WHO brought the cat in, but is playing "dumb". Good for him/her! - Yeah, that was the best part of the article. They probably performed the surgery! LOL...nm

It's just a small newspaper, actually based in the town where Sue D. lives. They probably have some glitches.

unless there are mandatory s/n laws or mandatory licensing and vaccination laws, or laws about cats not being allowed outdoors, my guess is that this issue falls into property laws, i.e., the cat is owned by this woman, therefore she is in the right, legally.
Personally, I'd grab, spay/neuter any stray I found. But this article does show one needs to be careful, if not anonymous, about doing it. - I think it's one of those gray areas

The only law I'm aware of around here is the requirement for rabies vaccinations. So yes, you can let your cat wander outside, but then there are the property rights of others. If the cat is being a nuisance on someone else's property, they have the right of recourse, but that doesn't bode well for the cat. Nothing really protects the cat or any individual/group with the cat's best interests in mind. That's in terms of the law. Realistically speaking, I have no doubt that the DA's office is going to take zero interest in pursuing this. It's pretty weak, as well as totally lame. And what jury is going to convict someone, if they do catch someone, if the person comes in and has stories about this cat coming and causing harm on their property? And you know an unneutered male cat is going to be attracted to the site of a feral colony not under control yet. If you let your unvetted cat roam there's going to be no way to tell the difference between an owned and unowned cat. Kind of hard to tell someone they can't try to control such a problem on their property because some of the cats might actually have (crappy) owners. I don't see the DA wanting to get sucked into opening that can of worms. And either way you know it doesn't bode well for the cats.
What would that woman have done if the cat hadn't been TNR'ed (you know from the ear tip that the person thought the cat was unowned) but had been taken to AC or some even worse fate befell it? If it got hit by a car she'd probably blame the driver instead of herself for letting it roam. Dumb*ss.

I had an unneutered male stray I called Hardy (he first showed up with a small black cat so I named them Laurel & Hardy) at my colony. He was a gorgeous, stocky, light gray and white. He was obviously well fed and never ate with the colony, although he did like cat milk. My point in telling you that is that I was never able to trap him to get him neutered because he would never take food as bait.
We was around for years. I know of at least two litters he fathered before I was able to s/n the entire group. When I returned the last female that was spayed, he never showed up again. He was just looking for love, as do all unneutered males. And they roam very far and wide to find it. - If they are allowed out doors

they should have a collar with a rabies license at a minimum. Otherwise, how would you know a stray from a cat who has a home? You wouldn't know! So I guess you are just supposed to turn a blind eye and all the rescues and TNR groups, too. And how long will it take before cats are running all over the place in swarms.
If a cat shows up on my property (or even public property) with no tags (and no microchip), it's mine if I want it, far as I'm concerned. - Wouldn't that only apply if the cat was taken (with witnesses) from the owner's property?...msg

Since she doesn't know who did it, and took a while to notice that the notch was not caused by a "normal" cat fight and the pom-poms shrunk, I doubt she can make a case. - I haven't a clue. (msg)

My main point is that cats and dogs are considered property which, IMHO, is why so many laws concerning them are draconian and why people who abuse animals usually get off very lightly. - Unfortuneately, when rescuing or tnring, you don't always know...msg

if a cat is owned or not. There ar a number of cats that come around my yard. Some I know for a fact are feral. Others I'm not sure. I've been up and down the block and no one knows nothing about any of them. Even Cali-Co and Morris looked very well kept and looked a meal or two short of being well fed. I thought they were owned. They were confirmed by several neighbors to be feral. I think whoever neutered this cat may have done so thinking the cat was feral.
And still, if the owner is so concerned, the cat should have been kept inside. Neutering also cuts down on the chances of the cat getting testicular cancer or other things of that nature later in years. And since he does go out, doesn't mean he doesn't spray! She may never had the opportunity to see him, if he does.
It should also be a good lesson to her. Whoever neutered him could have easily been a whacko, ticked about him on their property and feeding him poison.
I wonder if she lets her dog run loose too. - They got another comment from me, too

Didn't say it there, but maybe Sammy's owner should be neutered too, dumb a$$ should keep the cat inside and stuff like this wouldn't have to happen. Forgot to add there, but neutering, besides keeping down the population also decreases the cat's chances of getting testicular cancer later in life.

If whoever neutered Sammy knew he was owned by someone, it should not have been done. Too often there are cats wandering around that are not owned and will continuously populate the area. TNR is an attempt to keep the population down. It doesn't sound like Sammy was wearing a collar or was chipped which could have prevented the neutering. And if his owner is so concerned about him, he should be kept inside. Outside there are too many hazzards such as anti freeze, cars, whackos, traps, and people who just want to keep the population down. His owner should be careful about complaining. Some towns or counties have alws about the number of pets a household can hold and licensing laws. This should be a lesson to them as to the kinds of trouble Sammy can get into outside. He should just be kept inside and safe. - Where do the blogs appear? I can't find them????...nm

That story was posted yesterday and I'm sure there must be at least one other person besides myself that has tried to post to their blog. I then tried to register and the register page comes up completely blank. Somehow I get the feeling they took a beating on this one becuase the story seems to side with the owner.
Looks like I'll have to write to the editor too. Maybe they should all be neutered...heh heh heh - My letter to the editor...wonder if that page shows up anywhere?..nm

This is in regards to the story posted yesterday about Sammy the unexpected neutered cat . If Sammy's owner was so concerned, he would have been kept inside. CULPRIT? Don't these idiots know there's a massive S/N (some mandatory laws being considered) nationwide? Is she living in a cave? And she didn't wish to neuter him cause "he didn't spray"??? She's an idiot. I'd like to tell her that face to face. I hope they get bombarded with letters pro S/N. Whoever neutered that cat, hats off to them and the expense they personally incurred. That cat was probably howling, fighting (proof when she wasn't concerned re: a piece of his ear gone), and knocking up other cats. Sheesh. I see your pt. tho (or rather your hubby's pt.).

Regarding Ms. Symonds and her neutered cat-
Perhaps while visiting Phelps Veterinary Hospital, she could receive a badly needed education on the realities of cats’ lives and the need to spay and neuter. Unneutered her cat would have eventually sprayed, he would wander, he would fight, he had the potential to produce literally thousands of homeless and unwanted kittens, and he was at risk to contract and spread life threatening feline diseases such as feline aids and feline leukemia. Whoever found her cat straying and thought he was unowned did the cat and the village of Clifton Springs a huge favor by neutering him. Instead of having the person arrested, Ms. Symonds needs to educate herself about the very serious issue of pet overpopulation and feral cat management. She has a lot to learn about responsible pet ownership.
