...all my cats would eat a good food with either/or chicken, turkey, salmon meal and rice but no soy or no corn. Foods like Eagle Pack Holistic C&R, Innova, California Natural, or even Chicken Soup would be good. I have some that will only eat Purina ONE though which I know has corn in it (not sure about the soy) and some that will only eat the new Iams digestive in the pink bag (has corn). What are you gonna do?

I would like to get them off the grain food, but am sort of at a loos what to try. - Have you looked at EVO?

a tad more protein & supplements, but it's no bargain. - The corn gluten meal was almost certainly made in China

One thing that emerged from the pet food recalls last year was the increasingly common industry practice of using "Non Protein Nitrogen" (NPN) sources in dog food. Translation: Meat is an expensive source of protein. Grains which have been processed into glutens (which are concentrated sources of nitrogen) are a lot cheaper - especially if you buy them from China where labor costs are so much lower. It was the processed wheat gluten (and even just plain old wheat FLOUR!) that had been spiked with the melamine and cyanuric acid to fool the chemical assays and those were the same two chemicals which - when combined in the urine inside a cat's kidney - formed the big honkin' crystals the did all the damage - killing all those animals and leaving untold thousands more with a lifetime of kidney damage.
So count me out of any food that has to get its cheap protein source from (insert grain name here) gluten that was made - and very possibly contaminated - in China. - Chicken meal = good. Chicken *by-product* meal = not so good...msg

But better than a grain as a first ingredient! There's an awful lot of corn, and filler (powdered cellulose, brewers rice, soybean hulls) in this food, and I just can't see how soybean meal is something that should be fed to cats or dogs.
You see where all those advertised vegetables and fruits come on the ingredients list? There's more salt in this food thanspinach, parlsey, cranberries, carrots, or cheese powder.
This food isn't any better, really, than plain old Purina Cat Chow, which is probably the best of the supermarket brands.
Poultry by-product meal, ground yellow corn, wheat flour, corn gluten meal, soybean meal, brewers rice, beef tallow preserved with mixed-tocopherols (source of vitamin E), fish meal, brewers dried yeast, animal digest, phosphoric acid, potassium chloride, calcium carbonate, tetra sodium pyrophosphate, calcium chloride, choline chloride, dicalcium phosphate, salt, taurine, zinc oxide, ferrous sulfate, vitamin supplements (E, A, B-12, D-3), L-Alanine, riboflavin supplement, niacin, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, biotin, thiamine mononitrate, folic acid, pyridoxine hydrochloride, copper sulfate, citric acid, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of vitamin K activity), calcium iodate.
Chicken by-product meal, poultry by-product meal - not a whole lot of difference, really. The Cat Chow has an "identified" source of fat (beef tallow) where the Healthful Life has unidentified fat (animal fat can be fat from ANY animal including, I'm afraid, rendered euthanized pets). The Cat Chow doesn't have artificial colors, the HL does. Great marketing, though, to add "healthful" to the name and sell a poorer quality food for more money!
If I had to choose between the regular Cat Chow and this new Healthful Life, I'd probably go with the Cat Chow! It's a (slightly) better food at a (slightly) lower price-per-pound.

and they snarfed it up and wanted more.
They all have spiky, greasy backs. I feed them Purina and Fancy Feast. I have no idea what to do about their hair. Every one of the foofy ones looks like that. - I bought some of it but....msg

only fed it for about 2 weeks.The ingredients are pretty much the same as purina cat chow.One of my ferals started losing a lot of fur and I guessed it was an allergy to something in the food.I bought some purina one and some iams for the indoor cats and feed just purina one,along with canned friskies to the ferals.
Basically,our vets proclaim iams to be the best because its supposed to clean teeth but IMO,what you can afford is whats best for yours.
Mine did just fine on cat chow but I changed them last year because of come urinary tract issues we had with Junior,patches and Jett. - We got some Friskies the other day....msg

for Louie. We thought he might like it, that's what he ate before. He was so pleased! Ate his and anyone else's he could get to.
He eats Fancy Feast but I don't think he loves it. - My foster was eating cat chow

when i got him last week and he had hair loss that after some posting and questions and answers, was determined it probably was a food allergy. He's off it now and seems like his skin/fur is improving. - My affected feral was looking glossy....msg

Noofies and I e-mailed back and forth a few weeks ago about food and I'm still in the process of moving mine off of Science Diet and on to Kirklands Maintenance (from Costco). One or more were throwing some of it up, but I wasn't sure if it was food or just the occasional tummy upset so I have been really slow with the change. The corn gluten meal and ground yellow corn aren't good ingredients. The corn gluten meal can lead to "struvite crystals" - which I think is the cause of UTIs. - I've tried so many different dry foods on these Heathens, like yours they like, msg

anything new then after the new wears off they won't eat it....Sometimes I look for free samples & send for them & each time they gobbled it down & I go buy a bag & they turn their noses up...

I usually give the food to my ferals, they aren't nearly as picky as the indoor cats, although none of them will eat 9-Lives canned. The price of cat food has gone way up but Petsmart has the four pack of 9-Lives on sale for $.91 as opposed to $1.60 for 4 cans of Friskies ($.40 a can now!). So I made the switch for my outdoor cats and I've been slipping in a can here and there of the 9-Lives for my own gang. I feel bad for having to switch but none of them seem to mind and are eating it just fine.

I bought some of the 9-Lives canned for 91 cents for 4 and have been slipping some in here and there as well. - I was buying that four pack for .99

which is a very good deal here but they ran out. I am paying .60 a tin for Friskies if I buy it by th can. I usually get the case and then pick up the individual cans that they love and are no in the case. - Mine just love 9 lives canned

when I can find it. Tuna and sauce, Super supper, Tuna and Chicken or the seafood . There used to be a lot more flavours but no stores carry it anymore.
