from the Acme boards or when I had my mother in law's Siamese cats for 18 long and agonizing months. My niece that wanted the Siamese boys finally got her own place and got married so the cats are now with her and they are very happy, she and her husband adore them. I was glad that she still wanted them even though I made her wait over a year until she had her own place and no roommates, because I wanted to only place them if I was sure it would work out. Amazingly enough the cats rode in the van without complaint. I had connected to large wire dog crates together and they had a litter box, toys and beds, they were comfy for over half the ride, but then I had to put them in large cat carriers before I gave them to my niece to take them home. I was coming from PA and she was coming from WI. My cat Mower (as in wow) died in February. He went into cardiac arrest during a dental surgery and I miss him very much. So we only had Lily the formerly feral (who STILL after 11 years thinks we plan to fry her up for dinner some days). I had always told my children we couldn't get a kitten until after Mower passed away, I didn't expect him to any time soon, so then I told them it would have to be summer time, and after baseball/fastpitch season. So we've had a kitten for a week tomorrow. He's a sweet little guy and perfect for my kids (who are very cat illiterate as our other cats were not the kind they could hold or cuddle, I could, but they could not). I'm hoping for some suggestions on making the transition to supervised kitten to unsupervised kitten with Lily. I currently have Tiger (what a hoot, I crack up every time I hear his name, it just strikes me as so funny), with free access to the livingroom, kitchen, and upstairs hallway (not in bedrooms or bathrooms yet) and have the downstairs gameroom babygated so that Lily can hide in her "safe zone". When I can't supervise Tiger, he is placed in a large wire dog crate (48"L x 27"W x 36"H) with his food, litter box, cave, toys and bedding. The crate is in the livingroom. He spends his nights in it, and if I have to leave for a while etc. Lily seems to be the kind of cat that I have to push or she'll just hide forever. I spend a lot of time giving her attention (she is so lonely without Mower), and I sit with her while she eats, after Mower died, she started running over to the food when I was near it, so I just visit with her when she eats now, but she does eat without me as well. I've shown her the kitten a few times and then I take him away, she's gotten a bit curious about him and has come up to the living room twice now on her own, but stays far from the crate and walks slowly and silently when she's up here. Today I put her in the crate for a few minutes, and I mean a few, it may have been three minutes and stuck Tiger's tail thru and she gave it a good sniff. I then took her out of the crate and held her against her will while my daughter held Tiger in place so Lily could just be near him or observe him if she chose. Tiger was very cooperative, he mewed a bit, rolled on the floor a bit, and in general looked like a baby hoping to solicit attention from her. She did look at him a few times, but mostly just presented her side to him and tried to leave. Again, I kept her against her will and she did growl twice, but she was clearly wanting to leave. Obviously she could have clawed/bit etc to escape me but she did not (she is really a good girl). I was thinking of feeding canned cat food to both Lily and Tiger in the same room with Tiger in a cat carrier at dinner each night to see if I can help this along, but don't want to do damage. Like I said, Lily has to be pushed sometimes out of her comfort zone and realize that she survived to make progress. My husband finds it funny that she's more comfortable with our German Shepherd than with people, and Bastian forgot himself yesterday, he's trying to be very gentle to Tiger and he came in from going potty and had to rush over and nuzzle Tiger, poor Tiger, I thought he was gonna fall over when that big head came at him to nuzzle, but it was so fast he didn't have time to arch his back or walk sideways on his toes while hissing. What a hoot. So any suggestions or comments on what I should do or stop doing?
