The digestive enzymes brandypup and I are talking about are useful when a lot of food is passing through the animal's system without being fully utilized (often detectable by noticing that there is a lot of stool being produced). Adding a digestive enzyme will help the animal break down and use food more efficiently. The evidence becomes apparent when stool volume decreases.
My dog is almost 14 years old, and it's quite common for the digestive system to become less efficient as the animal becomes older. He was putting out so much poop - along with losing weight - that I was beginning to wonder if his body was utilizing much of the food he was eating at all.
Since adding the digestive enzymes (initally Prozyme, but now Syner-G) not only has his stool volume decreased, but he started putting on weight again. To the point where I had to actually DECREASE his meal sizes a bit to keep him at an optimum weight!
Glory is not an old cat, but she did seem to be putting out a lot of stool. So I started giving her some of the Syner-G and her stool volumes have also decreased. - Another note on probiotics and diarrhea

on 10/14/2009, 1:41 pm, in reply to "Those are probiotics"When you're going to be getting an antibiotic (the "you" can be either human or animal) it often helps to start a course of probiotics to help replace the "normal flora" that the antibiotic will destroy. This will help a LOT with the diarrhea that often comes with a course of antibiotics.
Ideally, you begin the probiotic BEFORE the antibiotic. Then - because the antibiotic will kill the microbes (that's its job, after all!) - you alternate probiotic with antibiotic during the entire course of treatment. So - for example - if I'm taking an antibiotic every 8 hours, then I will take a probiotic on "alternate 8 hours", or 4 hours after every antibiotic dose.
This has worked well for me. - I've got some real stinkers here! (msg)

mom says some of the cats here practice chemical warfare. there are a couple that make her HAVE to scoop to the box if they use one in the computer room where she works.

as long as she isn't straining, isn't dehydrated & it isn't runny, we woudln't worry.
you're doing a mom - seeing everything and saying 'oh no, oh no, oh no' try to take a deep breath, eat a few shrimpies, and relax.
