Yeah. I totally agree.
The Death of Arthur Jr was devestating on the history of Aquaman... though you'd think pretty much nothing had happened if you read pretty much ANY of his appearences back then.
IT (The death) was NEVER dealt with.
Aquaman was always the chara that was easy to make fun of. No one ever truely (At that time) understood what it took to BE Aquaman.
You know... exactly how tough-fast-intelligent he was.
He was a King... I am sure he could marshall his voice in such a commanding (But respectful way) that during JLA meetings he would have and should have overshadowed everyone except possibly Wonder Woman (A princess in her own right and stanchly independent).
But the writers of then... and now just ignored him.
...and if anyone thinks that his Posidon look made him more of a true speaker in the JLA (Morrison book I believe)... I beg to differ. He was a bully in the JLA. As he had become when he shut the original League down. He wasn't good guy Aquaman. He wasn't the Heart of the League as he of all the chara (at least the male ones) should have been.
If I could take him back. Back to his roots. Back to his origins. Back to his being an incredible family man (Which is SO sorely needed these days in DC-any Universe) then he could shine like Boyscout Superman as he always did before.
Aquaman was never shady to my recollection. He was a straight on speaker. He told it like it was and shaved the edges off to make it as gentle as possible... that doesn't make him weak. It makes him a King.
He could have been loved as much as the "Real World" Princess Di was. For many of the same reasons. but... alas... they let him slip into the mires of the deep... and his return to what he was would be a long road.
But... It does seem that there seems to be at least a small mass of fans (and some writers/artists) that are trying to harken back the Silver Age... To find direction again.
DC continunity wasn't always great... it wasn't I know. But the Crisis didn't fix anything. It made it worse. For everyone... for chara like Aquaman... the JLA... JSA... Infinity Inc... the Titans... certainly Hawkman & Hawkgirl (Both worlds)... Wonder Girl (Donna)... Huntress and Robin (E2)... and a host of others.
Problem is... starting over... does it again.
20 yrs is a long time... to make amends for bad writing and the introduction of a more violent confused world...
You can punch all the crystal walls you like. The DCU ended when the Crisis started. In my mind there is no fixing it.
I would love to be proven wrong.
