waves, catching a good second wave with a good bowl finishing the ride off with a
smooth roll over Surge, Andre Botha from South Africa dropped into a 6ft grinder
barrel but couldn't exit the barrel. Hugo Pinheiro (Portugal) had average second and
third waves; his wave selection let him down. Cronulla local Alex Leon blasted his
way into the lead with an opening long ride across white rock and into surge. His
second wave produced a 360 spin and finished with a roll into the snowball over
surge.
heat. Cronulla local Dave Ballard opened the score with some smallish but long
rides. Jeff Hubbard (Hawaii) and Dave Winchester tried to out invert each other with
both pulling off some unbelievable aerial manoeuvres. Western Australian Adam
Luehman couldn't find the waves he needed so ending his winning streak from the
trials.
surge. Sydney's Alex Bunting pushed a Rollo right on to the middle of the island and
on to dry reef - then casually paddled back out. His composure showed in the next
few rides where he caught a few good ones around the surge and rolling out of them.
Dave Crowley launched twice off the lip - landing right in to the reef and looked a
little worse for wear after. Virtue busted a massive invert with a feet first
landing in to a few inches of water; he also caught a good one with a smaller invert
on the end but it wasn't enough.
heat with clean inverts on the end bowl. Hawaiian Mike Stewart however was picking
off the larger peaks and scored a classic ride on his 3rd wave with a perfect set up
and a nice roll on the exit. Both men continued their dominance throughout the heat,
unfortunately not leaving much for the other 2 competitors, New Zealand's Sam Wells
and Sunshine Coast's Ben Gohl.
opened up the action by launching himself with an invert right in to the middle of
the reef. Queensland's Mitch Rawlins got underway with a few tight rides including
some smooth inverts to open his account. Martinez continued to stand out launching
into another massive Rollo on a set wave and eating it heavily on his 5th wave.
The action soon slowed down however with the swell backing off at the top of the
tide up in this heat, we had Eddie Solomon from the USA filling in for Tamega -
Soloman was finding it hard to find the winning rides. Kirkman looked the hungrier
out of the 4 competitors as he locked in to a few longer barrels.
probably the deepest and almost impossible barrel ride in to the channel. 2x world
champ Damian King executed at tight 360 spin in the pocket and came out with the
classic cutback reverse combinations. South African Daniel Worsley and Dallas Singer
both launched into the middle of the reef on several occasions risking abrasions on
limbs and equipment though it was Riguccini again scoring some serious rides exiting
his tubes with spins. King made a late charge to secure his next round placing.
was the local charger John Showell who snatched two of the biggest waves of the day
on Surge riding the foam ball out of both of them. Cronulla's Andrew Lester started
off his account with a solid wedge on surge, rolling out of a massive section. It
was a pretty quiet heat for Lester there after. Avalon's Toby Player was pushing it
hard on the inside and ended up on the reef on a few occasions through sheer
persistence; however his late charge in the dying minutes of the heat nearly forced
an upset and managed with Lester just making the cut for the quarter finals.
