Superb posts - your ramblings give lots of food for thought and bring back long forgotten memories. My first match at the Turf was behind Adam Blacklaw stood on the terrace section of the old wooden stand before the CF was built. I can't remember the score even, but I remember being hooked and wanting to experience that rush again. That Saturday morning feeling of about 11am wanting time to fly by till I could get to the bus stop and stand there with my scarf proudly round my neck and with a bit of luck getting an offer of a lift from a fellow Claret and then be able to buy a programme with the bus fare. I haven't worked it out but I wonder if the busfare has kept pace with the cost of a programme or vice versa! and then HORROR if the match was postponed due to bad weather aaaagh!!!! that total emptiness for the rest of the day. You couldn't put a price on the anticipation of the match.....trying to persuade my mum that being in the ground at 1pm wasn't too early. Sometimes getting sneaked even earlier than that with the Special Inspector through the underneath of the CF and then climbing over the wall and down onto the track and over the wall onto the Longside and getting the barrier right up at the back next to the wall where the steps led up. Watching the fans arrive and the away fans and wondering if "they" would "take" the Longside then watching the topdog arrive and the Longside great the swagger of the real tough nuts. I also remember running away from chain swinging louts from Wolves and the vast numbers of Geordies who swamped us (one of whom nicked my first ever Clarets scarf)and to add insult to injury beat us 2 or 3 nil I think. The Longside produced new songs from time to time responding to the individual teams that came and converting the pop tunes of the day to Claret ends "I was born under a Claret star" - "Come on without, come on within you've not seen nothing like the mighty Flynn" Happy days eh?
