Have you worked on a paper/ If so do you know Peter Dewhurst on Nelson Leader? or his dad Ernest who was on the old Manchester Guardian? Just a chance you might know them?
CB&H has a friend who is training to be a sports reporter and quite often goes to a variety of games for the experience. If you have thoughts on reporting in general I'd be interested to hear them.
