I read this board from time to time and I saw someone picking on my friend Ken Dillon. I thought to myself, you know Ken is one of the last of the good guys. He does what he does because he loves radio. It isnt easy getting up at 3:30am and dragging your butt to the station. Reading newspapers, showprep, checking websites, all of that because you just want to do a good show. After you finish the show, you then tend to your other duties...writing copy, recording prod, arguing with sales people who dont understand why their client can't come in and talk about whatever they want to talk about and the list goes on...you work a lot of hours...and you dont get paid nearly enough.
I spent 20 years in Radio and when it stopped being fun, I started to look for a way out. I remember growing up and listening to KC radio and I would just be in awe. They sounded bigger then life, you would call in and just hope that you were able to speak to your favorite Jock. When I got my first part time job at a station, I was in High School. I was just happy to be there. I would babysit ball games, erase stacks of carts, take out the trash..whatever they asked me to do. I would pick the brains of the talent and try to learn from them. I don't see that too much these days. The young people want their own show. They know nothing of the lost art from of Radio. Reel to Reels, turntables, cart machines...all of that is something they hear about in the old days...Sometimes..I miss the old days.
I know that there is a lot of smack on this site. People digging at others, talking trash..Guys and Gals, incase you didn't know..Radio will never be the grand old dame that she once was. It is sad. There was a time that it meant something. You served your community in the good and bad times. You came together when there was a flood, or a tornado, or someone lost everything to a fire. Now we have "Community Spotlights" and we cram 15 things into 60 seconds and we bury them in the overnight hours.
Maybe instead of being angry at each other and taking the energy to make fun of people...we should use that energy to support one another. To look out for our fellow "jocks". This business won't be around forever...enjoy it while you can...life is too short to be filled with bitterness and anger.
That is just my 2 cents...now if you wish to make fun and put down...thats fine.
