Posted by Hope We decided no way we were going to do preschool. The payoff in terms of learning as versus the cost in increased illness just wasn't big enough--I could teach them as effectively at home. And we didn't do Church nursery either--we waited until the children turned 3, which is when they are put into a regular class at Church. We did this because we learned they only cleaned the toys in the nursery every 6 months--UGH! Of our 3 boys with CF, the two youngest are in school, and the oldest (10 going on 11) is being homeschooled. It is very true that our sons in school bring home illness. In fact, that's what we are dealing with right now--one's sick and we are increasing GSH doses for everyone in the meantime. And I teach at a university, and bring home things, too. We do try to be anal about doing the antibacterial hand wash thing as soon as everyone comes home from school. And we just bought a UVC bulb sterilizer for the air in our home, which I think has helped. We are homeschooling our 10 year old with CF not because of the infection issues, but because he has learning issues and needs special attention without being labelled a special education child, if you get my meaning. I just learned you can buy hand-held UVC bulb sterilizers, so you can zap a particular item, llike a backpack. I am thinking of getting one for Christmas. Anyhow, this has been long and rambling, but I just wanted to share that we, too, have felt we had to weigh the benefits and costs carefully before feeling comfortable with a decision about school.

I love this list, because you folks are the only ones that talk about the kind of decisions my own family struggles with, too.
