Come on...gardening and digging in dirt? I think with precautions some of these things can still be part of their lives. We have a fish tank with cover and filter to protect from bacterial overgrowth, one house plant which is out of reach, and a community garden he is very much involved in. He digs and enjoys the outdoors as much as anyone else in our family and I wouldn't change that. I might encourage gloves and hand washing/purelle with respect to gardening but I do that for myself and my noncfer. PA and staph live on everything, you can't live in a bubble or create an overly sterile home...we'd go nuts. You will never be sure how and where they pick up a bacteria if and when they do, so caution without fear of everything is my policy.
