Well folks our winter season of tropical adventures is now behind us and prior to shoulders down and ass up agian for anouther spring summer season of work I will attempt to write a chronicle of our winters travel to and around the south. Now I know there are some purest out there that crindge when they come across a spelling error or a forgotten or neglected comma . For those read no further and cease your endless drivel over nothing, in other words get a life!My story for those who care to read it is soley for entertianment value and if there are a few things in here that give you an idea what the countryside or travel is like in a certian area well thats a plus.
On or about mid november of the past year my dear wife and i loaded our 2001 jeep sahara. After months of plans and even more debate we decided to bring almost nothing with us . To some of you this would be almost impossible but to our credit we left with a small suitcase each and a little duffle bag or nap sake for short hikes, say to get beer or something like that.
I must add a small foldable cooler was placed in a handy and accesable location for easy access .
In the back of the jeep we had a carrier in it were tow ropes tie downs 2 spare gas contianers a case of beer in case of trouble and a couple blankets and air matress, in case we found the need to sleep one off!
Leaving Vermilion Alberta we set out on leg one of our expedition, it would only be a short hop as Bons brother and his wife had made arrangments for our stay in Kindersly Saskatchewan. You know where the riders are from ! Well this would put us in a completly different line then some of our past trips south bringing us 3 hrs to the east and now lining us up with such places as Kerobert Sceptreand Antelope Saskatchewan. Thriving communities one and all!
In any case back to our trip , after about 3 or so hrs of travel we arrived at Wayne and Margies place unloaed and began to get loaded agian taking a different route this time a more liquifide route if you get my meaning . Off for supper we went to a hole in the wall reasteraunt that would rival Shea's in New York! We were wined and dined while we listened to saprano sax and clarinet . An unbelievable treat of swing and jaz for an evening of cheers and best wishes for our trip. Big old Rodger and his lovley partner Tequila sheila were along for the ride , and we did need someone to drink the white wine as for me Only the best reds pass these lips . Well would you believe only just about anykind of reds pass these lips! And beer and well you get the idea! Fortunatly Margie not nessaraly know for her abstanace had indeed done just that and was in charge of getting us back to our lodgings for the evening, this accomplished to bed we went to ready ourselves for a long day manana.
5 oclock came at 5 oclock and so did 6 . WE though had a different plan for leaving at about 7 so thats what we did stuffing now a star choice dish and reciever in the back of the jeep
We pulled out of town on our first real day of travel . Heading south down towards Sceptre then on to Climax a bit latter . Yes I said Climax a small town in southern Sask with a whole bunch of real happy people in it . (Sorry no kids allowed)We arrived at the boarder and were met by a whole new generation of attendents . Now I have never realy had a terrible time at the boarder such as some say they have been met with but today was not to be an ecception . The 2 or 3 folks at the boarder post into the US were extremly friendly and were so very nice to deal with , we passed trough in record time with good wishes on our trip from the Police there . Travel in southern sask is not what one may think with towns dotting the hyways , but in fact it changes little as you venture into northern Montana . Yes we have no gas stations is the standard response . after limping on for several miles on empty we pulled into a card lock in the middle of nowhere , thats right a card lock pump sitting almost on the side of the road in northern Montana. Hyw 241 to harlem then Havre on #2. We topped up and pushed on traveling at break neck speeds as not a car was to be seen.
Travel in Montana seems to me so relaxing as the roads rarly are overused and traffic flow is in my experience very rapid . Not to many lagerts dodeling along in this state . I dont really know which state they do keep the dodelers in south of the boarder . Here in Canada most of the poorest drivers are required to live in British Columbia . It is felt by the goverment that if we all know where the bugers are we can take special care when travelling there. A word to the wise from out of the country use care in BC!
But I digress The further south we travel this second day the winds get stronger and stronger trying to push us back to where we came from but our trusty jeep forces it way carring its travelers on to a nice bar at the end of the day in a small town in northern Wyoming. Here in Mechche we spend the evening eat drink and sleep in a very strongly ranching community horse rails and all in front to the local eatery.
Day 3 brings us further south as one might expect if one was driving in that direction. On into Wyoming , Miles and miles of wind and tumble weed .Passing such sites as Termopilis and Lander, we press on into the driving wind strengthening as we proceed At Lander we make a deccission that could change our entire trip but doesnt . We head to Rawlings . I should clarify that statement of decission making , had we turned west rather than east we would indeed have change or ajusted our travel. That being said we didnt so i will continue.Passing Rawlings Wyoming we turn to the west and head down old hyw 80 to the juction of 789.What a familiar place for some but for us it was a bit confusing and was the first place were we were paced by a state trooper . I proceed with the utmost care knowing I have larger tires on my jeep and wondering how that is effecting my speed reading on my speedo (not evelleyn woodhead speed reading)As fate would have it we bored the hell out of out pursuit trooper and headed agian to the south. Now Old 789 is a fairly narrow hyw and has a few more sites to see but by inlarge there is little yet to see eccept the great open spaces . As we entre Colorado red rock canyons and such become the vista for us for the next part of the trip south.
As we drive south passing towns such as Criag Rifle and Grand Juction we decide to take a diversion instead of following the more popular hyw south #80 we will slip down #141 towards Gateway . At this little stop there is one of the most luxurious spas I have seen owned by the fellow the started the Discovery channel . This spa houses some incredible wonders , so if you are in the area stop by tell them jim and bon sent you . I really dont think it will do anything but make them scratch there heads . That might get a laugh so go ahead tell them anyway.
We push on in latter afternoon pulling into a small town of Naturita Colorado we have indeed found a real jewel here . Our travel down hyw 141 has been a total pleasure holding site after site incredable things to see in this remote part of Colorado . A real must see and for the motercycle folks get your ass in there its worth the trip.
Well my fingers are getting sore so I will close for the day by saying we had a wonderfull evening in Naturita with the locals they genuinely made us very welcome . The food was great the beer cold and the peolpe just wonderfull .
Have a good one and will pick up agian later when I dont know but it will be latter.
