why oh why do readers fixate on these ridiculous details?
I don't believe that concepts of sexual-preference apply to aliens. Or at least, not to the Skrull species because by nature they are considered androginous. Or however thats spelt. As explained by Xavin, sexual nature is like hair color to skrulls, and can be altered at will. The fact (although its all fiction) that Xavin can is capable of altering the type of sex organs she possesses and then makes a comparison to that of changing his hair color is a testement alone to the notion that sexual orientation simply does not apply to Skrulls. As I interpret their romantic lives, they find a mate not based on physical appearance, but rather on compatability or other reasons. Physical attraction seems to be null and void of necessity with Skrulls. How could it apply if they can simply alter their appearance at will. They're aliens.
Xavin and Karolina's intended marriage was an arranged deal and in order for Xavin to convince Karolina to at least try, for the sake of the future of their respective worlds, she took on the form of a female, knowing that Karolina would find that more appealing. It sounds entirely deceptive, but think of the stakes that were on the line. And its been demonstrated that over time the 2 grew to care for eachother regardless of the gender Xavin would display daily.
They are aliens. Not human. Less questioning, more reading and enjoying the story! Geez.
