Alan Davis and Chris Claremont proved this week they deserve every accolade that's ever been sent their ways. True, Claremont has fallen lately because his style doesn't appear to work too well when he's not the sole arbiter of continuity and Davis does tend to have a slightly timeless, retro style but with these two books they have shown they are masters of their game.
I loved ClanDestine the most but then I will almost always pick Davis over just about anyone not named Colleen Doran. It all just made sense as he barrelled toward the climax and tied everything up in a nice nifty bow. The one climax could have come off as a god out of a machine type ending but didn't to me. I never felt as if Our Heroes were really losing so it was no big deal that Who showed up and did That. Now, if it had been the only possible resolution to the situation I might have felt different but there it was. The other climax, the one with Classic eXcalibur also had a nice reference to an earlier issue as its way out.
And geNext? I was worried right before buying issue one that I'd never read X-Men: The End but you know what? I didn't need to worry. Claremont knows how to make you care about middle chapters, giving you a beginning, middle, and end while still spinning a web that will be carried into the next issue. And Patrick Scherberger is a huge part of what makes it work. His style is fresh and nicely stylized while never forgetting that it isn't enough to visually wow us, we have to see a narrative.
