I'm not talking about a fight between the two teams, although there really isn't a team in Secret Warriors. There's Nick Fury. Period. No other character gets the spotlight or in depth on panel time. Do any of the Caterpillars even HAVE personalities? I can't tell. SW #7 is my last issue because they pile on mystery after mystery and shock after shock and never explain anything or give it any context. Besides, if they had been up front about this being basically a Nick Fury solo book I never would have bought it in the first place.
New Mutants on the other hand does have an advantage SW doesn't. There were years of stories defining who these characters were but let's be honest: That is never a guarantee that the characterization's going to be right. Just ask Mark Millar. Wells blew me away with how he's handled the team so far. They don't just match their last appearances but the ones who have been out of the spotlight act as if that time has passed with them doing something besides waiting to be remembered. Toss in another new wrinkle to Legion and Cannonball making the same mistake concerning Dani Moonstar as Emma Frost did (to his regret) and we've just had four issues of incredible fun!
There's not much from New Mutants that you can use as a lesson for Secret Warriors except this: Give all your characters a chance to shine and a few panels is not enough...
