Canadian Open sections?

I was looking at the pairings and wanted to know how the sections were done. For example, I noticed that Jean Hebert, an IM is in section B (in addition to several other masters), while there are many experts in section A. I guess rating isn't the only factor determining the sections?

I guess section A is an open but section B is for u-2400.

I think they are using the FIDE ratings instead of the inflated CFC ratings for the Canadian Open.

The Open section is like a Shark Tank with all those GMs playing.

I can think of numerous Canadian juniors who have done very well relative to their FIDE rating in recent Canadian Opens. In fact, I distinctly remember one of the theme's in Kitchener was some foreign players remarking on how underrated Canadians seemed to be. I think 2004 and 2005 in particular there seemed like a lot of really good results.

Your whole idea on the importance of FIDE ratings in Canada is illogical anyways. I'll tell you why. Many Canadians rarely play FIDE rated events. When they do, it's against serious travelling players. In fact, many of us question the importance of padding FIDE's bank account in local events and actually in one case we all voted not to rate a RR for that very reason.

Why do you not support your statements with factual evidence? Evidence is more convincing compared with "believing", "thinking" and other voicing of "opinion(s)".

Why would I feed into this idea that ratings matter ? I don't believe ratings are a very accurate measure of ability or potential. I'm only addressing the negativity Gary is expressing repeatably about Canadian chess players who make the effort to play in difficult events.

Statistically it's a no brainer that FIDE ratings in Canada are a terrible measure. Without activity what are you measuring ? It's not a mature rating pool.

The issue is inflating the rating system. What is referred to as the "rating boon" has done that.

Say 2004,2005,2006,2007, so which juniors did well? And how well? Are there juniors, that, relatively speaking, underperformed?

Support your statements with evidence.

As they say "Show me the money..."

Peter, I've gone counterculture I don't care about results or ratings nearly as much as you or any number of people on here seem to. I've come to realize just how deep the culture gets into these things and it's hard to rise above it but I have now done so.

It doesn't even matter to me if I'm right or wrong. If you prefer to think I'm wrong then fine I didn't research this maybe I am. I do know there were competitive games, people were excited about the Canadian action, most of the players got better somewhere if not the Cdn. Open. The details don't matter.

YOU, Duncan Smith, made a statement about ratings in your first post in this thread. P.S. simply asked you to back it up with some facts and figures. Your response is to (1) imply that P.S. has a ratings obsession and (2) declare you've gone "counterculture"?? Don't you ever change?

Bindi Cheng, 2007 Canadian Open in Ottawa?

He outperformed his FIDE rating by about 130 points, gaining almost 40 in the process.

Of course that doesn't qualify as even a sample, but it is some evidence, however small.

I see Thavandiran, Tayar, and others putting some impressive games up against higher rated heavily titled foreign players.
