New CFC membership fees

From the CFC website:

The following new rates were approved at todays AGM in Montreal,

New annual membership dues:

Adult members � reduced from $ 36 down to $ 30
Junior members � reduced from $ 24 down to $ 20
Junior participating � eliminated
Family membership � eliminated
Tournament fee � adult $ 10, junior $ 5, cost to player unchanged, but provincial portion eliminated.

New rating fee schedule:

Rating fees - $ 5 per player per tournament
Junior rating fee � eliminated.

$5.00 rating fee per event? I wonder what will happen if the players don't think it's worth it.

"In economics, elasticity is the ratio of the change in one variable with respect to change in another variable, such as the responsiveness of the price of a commodity to changes in market demand or vice-versa. In terms of elasticity, a market or good can be described as elastic or inelastic as a means of describing its responsiveness to the change in another quantity."

An historically good example of an inelastic good has been gasoline. As price increases, demand changes very little. Great question Bruce, how inelastic are CFC ratings fees?

Heard on the news today that although gas prices went up 9% in May, actual revenue at the pumps rose only 2%. So inelasticity has limits. People are cutting back.

The high oil prices are really squeezing the American economy. We send them all our oil and gas and they send us all their money. When you couple this with all the other nations which are doing the same as we are it looks to me like the model is not sustainable.

I'd like to read the history books 20 years from now. It's my opinion the monetary crisis in the U.S. is far worse than the citizens are being told. Major auto manufacturers are in trouble and I can tell you the amount of energy that goes into make a car or truck is considerable.

Adjustments are already being made. Instead of moving toward gas and oil fired electricity government and private concerns are moving to the nuclear option. Wind farms will also get bigger. Geothermal will take the place of some conventional energy.

Energy was my line of work over the decades.

I'm enjoying the oil ride down.

In the time-honoured tradition of the CFC, the Chair could declare a motion to reconsider or rescind so quickly, out of order. And it seems that contemporary governors are shy about challenging a ruling of the Chair (see thread about straw votes).

Never mind that the measures themselves may be out of order ...

If that's the case ie. Governors are afraid to challenge rulings, then the Governors get the dictatorship they deserve.

The vote on this one was close.
14-12, I believe, with 2 abstentions.

I voted against.
I believe Mr. Bunning has good intentions here with this ratings fee increase.
But I think it will lead to less tournaments, and I hope it is rescinded before it takes effect on January 1st, 2009.

Two ways to deal with it. A person who voted in favour can move a motion of reconsideration, if that passes, the motion is back on the floor and can be subsequently passed, amended or defeated.

The second option is for someone to bring forth a fees structure motion that will supersede it. The second option mya be the cleanest and most expedient.

Increasing the rating fees is enormously short sighted. I thought $3.00 was already putting a damper on tournament ratings at chess clubs. All formal games over one hour should be rated for what would be considered a nominal fee, not a cash grab.

Another nail in the coffin.

I can hardly wait for the next GL so that we can all share in the beauty of the governors' logical thought processes in arriving at a 16.666667% reduction in adult membership fees - and this apparently with no solution in sight to the CFC's big problems. Ooooo, oooo, I think my spidey senses are tingling.

"... am I reading this correct that even junior events are now $5 per player!? If so, the CFC has just taken a gun and shot themselves. All that remains to be seen is where the bullet hit and how bad the damage is."

the motion came up out of nowhere...at the last minute...from someone who knows better...the CFC has rules to prevent this from happening...so here we go again...

don't expect this to be implemented as it was passed yesterday.

Might you be willing to share who presented this motion? I can't believe the lack of real information from the CFC AGM. I'm a big supporter of the CFC but poor communication by the CFC doesn't really do a lot to make a guy feel warm and fuzzy about the organization. Important decisions that have direct impacts on clubs and tournament organizers have been made and there's not a heck of a lot that we're hearing in the way of justifying the measures that were voted for.

Not only that, but I cannot stand some of the semi-official declarations I have seen about why the increase from $3 to $5 is good. None of us would ever run a business where we would take something so easily measureable and surveyable, and just twist it up, seemingly on intuition.

It reminds me of cult-like scenes that have been unfolding at my former job, where a slick VP would say something, and then treat it as fact just because he said it, not because it was fact.
