RA Fall Open (FIDE & CFC): CMA kiosk & registrations update Posted by Aris Marghetis on August 28, 2008, 10:55:09 Hi again, I am pleased to announce that Brad Thomson from the Ottawa Strategy Games store is planning to run a Chess&Math kiosk at the upcoming RA Fall Open. He will be there from about 12noon on the Saturday for the rest of that day, set up in the skittles room next door to the playing room. If there is anything that you would like him to bring, please feel free to contact him at the Ottawa store, (613) 565-3662, or via email: thomson at chess-math dot org Please find below the list of players registered so far, which is already almost at 30. Many thanks to the players who have already registered by email, and are sending their payments in now. I really appreciate not registering most folk at the last minute! On that note, I will be at the RA club tonight, August 28th, from about 7pm to 8pm, and next Thursday, September 4th, from 7pm onward, to take local registrations and payments. If you were planning on registering/paying at the RA, please feel free to come tonight, as next week, being the first week of the RA club 2008-2009 season, it's usually very busy! It is scheduled this year for the weekend after Labour Day. My plan is to spend lots of time with the family on the holiday weekend, thus earning time away to run the tournament the weekend after! Back to the event details, to start this new season, the Top (>=2000) section will now be rated FIDE. In addition, regular participants from past EOCA events will notice that the prize fund is getting chunkier. We're still working on potential sponsorship, but even without that, we should exceed $3000. On top of that, I used to offer discounts for GM and IM, and now there are also discounts for FM, and for the female equivalents: WGM, WIM, and WFM. We are also happy to announce that we have formed a partnership with the Crowne Plaza Hotel for those of you who need a place to stay. If you are indeed interested in taking advantage of the rate we negotiated ($100! off their regular weekend rate), I recommend you reserve as soon as you can. I am just wondering about something...is "Kiosk" used in English Canada or is the more popular word "booth" or "stand"...just a question from someone who has seen "cadence" in French translated by English folks to..."cadence" pronounced "KAdence"...rather than time control Larry  Post a Response

Having grown up in Montreal, I suspect that I sometimes unknowingly(!) use words that are really only used by anglophones/allophones in Quebec. Is kiosk one of those words? When you go to events like the Home Show, there are endless aisles of what I would call "booths" not kiosks, but it is all up for interpretation... How about a "portable store"? - try that, en francais...  Post a Response

Re: The word Kiosk :) Posted by Kerry Liles on August 29, 2008, 10:24:36, in reply to "The word Kiosk :)" On Windows, you can run Internet Explorer (Exploder as we like to call it...) in KIOSK mode with the (guess what) K switch: iexplore -k www.google.com Notes: - This can be done from the Start|run line - you can use Alt-F4 to kill the IE session - it is best to start somewhere specific (like the example) otherwise your start page is the beginning, and if it doesn't let you go somewhere, well, see the previous note KIOSK mode was meant so that you could set up a sort of an appliance running IE... sadly there are other ways to fool around with IE once it gets running...  Post a Response
