New signing Danny Western, previously of Amesbury Town, has left newly-promoted Sydenhams Wessex League Premier Division club Downton in favour of a move to local rivals Laverstock & Ford.
Downton boss Jeff Softley said: "Obviously we're disappointed with what's happened, but what can you do?
"We signed Danny again thinking he'd be a good addition to our side as we prepared for what we know will be a highly competitive Premier Division season.
"Everyone welcomed him back and he had looked sharp in pre-season, so it was very disappointing that having signed for us, he then changed his mind again.
"We don't want to keep players who don't want to play for us so after Laverstock & Ford made their approach we did the sensible thing and ripped up his registration so he could play for them in their opening game."
Laverstock & Ford beat New Milton Town 7-3 in their opening game, with Western scoring an impressive four goals, while Downton drew 1-1 at Horndean in an entertaining encounter.
