It depends on your dentist and he type of implant you receive.
I believe most patients do have to wait anywhere from several months to 6 or more — if not for the implant device itself, at least for the permanent crown.
In my case, I received an immediate-loading implant for a top, central incisor — and as the name suggests, both the implant and temporary crown (plus temp abutment) were all placed within minutes of the tooth having been extracted.
