Re: Basic question on implant cost

Hi, Cameron . . .
In a nutshell: there are 3 basic parts to an implant: (a) the titanium rod placed in the jawbone . . . (b) the crown . . . and (c) the abutment, which connects the previous to elements.
The cost of those are basically pretty standard; it's the placement of those pieces plus supplemental services that make it difficult to estimate the total costs.
e.g., While it's possible for an individual dentist to take care of the entire project, more often it is done by a team of dental specialists (i.e., one to place the "hardware" and one to arrange for and attach the crown). The cost of their services can vary widely, depending on their field of expertise, reputation, experience, etc.
If needed, supplemental services (e.g., extraction, bone augmentation, sinus lifts, etc.) will add to the cost.
So can the type of crown(s) (i.e., temporary and permanent).
In other words, there is no definitive answer to your question, but here is what my implant project involved and cost:
. . . Single implant on a top, front central incisor (#9)
. . . Only required supplemental work specifically related to the implant was extraction of a failing tooth; however I also agreed to a new (optional) crown on each of the adjacent teeth (#8 & #10) plus a crown replacement on one of the lateral incisors (#7).
. . . Replacement teeth included a temporary bridge (made by an outside lab) plus 4 individual porcelain-fused to high noble metal crowns (i.e. porcelain-fused-to gold). Of these, the implant crown was an immediate-loading one.
. . . Entire project was done by an individual dentist (10 minutes from my home) with extensive implant experience
Total cost was around $7,600 — with approximately $3,700 related specifically to the implant (i.e., placement, 1/4 of the temp bridge, 1 permanent crown, etc.). Also included in that fee were the costs of all follow-up appointments (approx 4-6) for monitoring of the implant, as well as color selection and placement of the permanent crowns.
My insurance covered next to nothing (just a portion of the extraction cost and a fraction of the the cost to replace my broken crown) . . . but I did receive a generous discount from my dentist for paying the entire cost in advance.
BTW, I received my implant in the summer of 2003 — in sunny southern california. (Obviously both the passage of time and location might affect any estimate you receive today, but $3,500 seemed to be about mid-range for services comparable to those I received 6 years ago..
Hope this info is useful.
