What is a Sinus Lift and how often is it done?

What is done during a sinus lift? Are there frequent complications? Is this common for upper implants? I have an acquaintence who said she had a nightmare experience with a sinus lift and she said she was in pain for over a month after the lift. She blames the surgeon who did it as he did not take her pain seriously but now I am worried about this procedure. I have an upper right molar that is crowned but is decaying and may need to come out. I am worried that I may need this procedure and want to be prepared if I do.
