Hi Cindy, Yes, a good part of this battle is attitude. Having a positive one and keeping it throughout are key. Like any new situation, there is lots of fear and trepidation going forward. Dentures are not the end of the world. In fact as others have pointed out they can open up a whole new world for you- nice looking teeth, no real pain, it is endless. Sure, dentures are not perfect but with practice and patience they will become YOUR teeth!
As far as not letting anyone see you when they are out- of course it is a very personal thing but keep in mind this is new to you and it is also new to those closest to you. They want to understand and support you but they are not going through it so they can't begin to understand what you are feeling physically or emotionally- let them into your world. The more they understand the easier it will be for you to heal and move forward. By asking for their input you can learn a lot about how you are doing. It is very hard to take that first step but the sooner you get to know the new you the quicker you can move on.
As far as when to have the dentures out to rest your gums- overnight is far easier than trying to make time during the day. It may not be perfect because of vanity issues but the lights are off and everyone is asleep....usually.
Good luck and feel free to ask us questions
Barbara
