Help Please!

Hello,
I have a cracked molar and I am getting a crown put on it. A week ago I had my 'prep' appointment and got my temporary crown. That day, I ended up with excrutiating pain. It lasted the rest of the day. The following days it was much better, but hurt if I chewed food on that side. My dentist said that if the pain wasn't gone by Monday (two days ago) he would refer me to an endodontist for an assessment (my dentist was going on holidays for 2 weeks).
The pain wasn't gone, so I went for my assessment with the endodontist and he said I should have a root canal, and he started it right away. The procedure was VERY short - probably only about 5 minutes (?!!). Later that day, I again ended up in extreme pain and no painkillers would help, even strong ones. Again, the following day it was much better, but I couldn't chew food on that side. The next day (today) the pain was back and the tooth itself had actually lifted up, making contact with my top molar when I close my mouth (it didn't before). I went back to the endodontist and he shaved down my temp crown so that the teeth would not make contact, and he prescribed antibiotics in case of infection. I do NOT like the endodontist - he doesn't tell me what he's doing and the whole place seems like a root canal factory, with him running from patient to patient. Unfortunately, I have paid ($1500!!!) already to have the whole procedure.
My questions are:
- Why is there so much extreme pain every time someone works on this tooth? Shouldn't the root canal have helped that??
- Why does the root canal have to be done in more than one appointment?
- Will the pain after the second appointment be as severe as it was after the first one?
- Does anyone have any good pain relief tips?
I feel really freaked out about all of this. This endodontist does not seem open to answering a lot of questions and my regular dentist is on holidays for another week and a half. I have a holiday planned for two days after my next root canal appointment and I'm afraid I'll have to cancel it. HELP!
THANK YOU!
