    Re: Need dentures - Help!

Cindy, it is normal to have these feelings. You approaching something which you have no control over, something totally new. Now is the time to be asking questions! Lots of questions, I know you are embarrassed to be in this position but you are not alone- mention this to close friends and family memebers- it seems everyone knows someone who wears dentures- ask to speak discretely to someone about their experiences. You may be surprised when you learn who wears dentures. Hopefully someone will want to help you out but if not, come here.

Making the quick change out over a long weekend is do-able but you have to understand that things with immediate dentures are not perfect. It will also not be 100% functional right away. Spend the weekend learning to talk, take nourishment in the form of soft stuff, ice cream is wonderful. And when you get back to work on Monday don't hide, the more you try to hide to more questions get asked. You will sound worse to yourself than to those around you.

As for the trip- go for it! The odds of your denture falling out of your mouth is slim. It may loosen but actually fall out is very rare. Be sure to stay in close contact with your dentist and make sure you get seen about a week before the trip so they can adjust or reline the denture for you to make sure it is comfortable. By then your gums should be closed up and you will be allowed to use some adhesive. This will help keep your denture stable.

The anxiety leading up to this procedure is often worse than the procedure itself. Try to put your mind at ease. Again, ask questions.

    Barbara
