Looking for info on choosing a Cosmetic Dentist?

Re: crown over abutment-difficult to find dentist

Thanks for the added info. Now I think I can see what's happened.

Actually, I had the same problem. A few years ago, for the first time in my life, I had agreed to try the new insurance my husband's Employee Group had just switched to. Delta let me choose a dentist within their network, but unfortunately, the one I picked (based on recommendation of a friend) turned out to be a jerk.

Although not the only reason I refused to have him work on my teeth, he did not even mention the option of an implant when he informed me my front tooth needed replacement — (only a bridge), because he assumed (based on my coverage) that I could not afford to pay for an implant. But when I asked, "Why not?" he was glad to recommend a friend to place the implant, and provide the crown himself (though it probably would not have been covered by Delta, which at the time and in our part of the country, considers implants "cosmetic" and therefore, not covered.

Instead, I chose a private dentist with extensive implant training and experience, who was able to handle the whole project. But extraction of my failing tooth was the only thing Delta paid for. Everything else was "out-of-pocket."

It sounds like you are pretty much in the same boat. Even if you can find an "in-network" dentist, it's probably unlikely your dental insurance will pay for an implant crown (which it's my understanding) really is constructed slightly differently than a regular one.

The advantage of having the work done by a dentist your OS recommends is that they probably already have working relationship, which could help the process move forward more smoothly.

On the other hand, if cost is the issue, it might pay to look around. One possible source for information is a reputable dental lab in your community. Because those companies usually work with a range of local dentists, they are in a position to see which ones place the most orders for dental crowns, as well as which orders are most trouble-free. If you're lucky, some may be on your insurance company's list of approved providers.

The downside, of course, is that there's no guarantee that any of the names they might mention will have experience working with your OS.
