Re: bad smell and pain from crown

    Hi, Laura . . .

Are you sure that crown is on securely?

Several years ago (before the tooth reached the point of being unsalvageable and was replaced with an implant) I had a similar problem with a crown supported by a post.

Due to a previous accident, the gum was prone to frequent infections—and with the opposing lower teeth creating added pressure, the post and crown often became loose.

Each time that happened, I visited my dentist, who removed the crown, cleaned it off and reglued it. But while the crown was off, the odor from the cavity it left was so bad, it was embarrassing.

Although rare, bacteria sometimes manage to find their way into crevices beneath a crown. Once trapped there, they could create a similar odor.

If I were you, I'd have my dentist check that crown to see if anything is going on beneath the surface — especially since the other symptoms you have mentioned could be signs of a periodontal problem.
