Looking for info on choosing a Cosmetic Dentist?
root canal reprise
Posted by Jeff on 9/5/2009, 5:13 pm
I had a root canal many years ago and thought nothing of it till more recently.
In one of my more recent dental visits, x-rays showed what I'm guessing is an abscess under the tooth that the root canal was performed on.
I definitely wanted more info on my options before doing any major dental work, but an incident today has kind of forced my hand - my crown came off and it got partially damaged. Also, I'm not sure how relevant this is, and I'm obviously no expert, but it looks like there was some decay on the tooth while it was under the crown. If I understand it correctly, the tooth is kind of dead anyway because of the root canal, but I'm not sure if that matters.
From doing some quick research, I think I'll try to temporarily re-cement the crown with some over the counter dental cement, but the bigger problem lies with what I need to do with the tooth.
I've been reading that a second root canal is complicated and expensive. I've read that surgery is another possible option. I've also read that it may be better to pull the tooth. Obviously I will have to go to an endodontist (sp?) to figure out what I should do, but I can't talk to one before Tuesday due to labor day and I figured it wouldn't hurt to see if people had any advice.
To throw one last monkey wrench into the equation, I'm a poor college student so I'm looking for the cheapest solution possible without sacrificing any sort of long term reliability.
