RC with crowns?
Posted by PARO on 9/7/2009, 11:25 pm, in reply to "Re: ??? price of Root. C vs. implant"
As I have posted before, I believe that dentists who promote prophylactic root canals are not practicing in the best interests of their patients.
While it is true that sufficient decay can make it impossible for a tooth to hold a filling and a crown is then indicated, it doesn't mean that a root canal is also necessary or even advisable.
Consider that a root canal really weakens a tooth by hollowing it out and drilling away much more of the tooth's structure simply to gain access to the pulp.
I believe that a root canal should only be performed when indicated - such as infection, or carious or mechanical exposure of the pulp. And I believe that to perform one simply on the chance that a crown prep will make one necessary is irresponsible and may reflect a lack of skill in doing a crown prep.
I have had many crowns done, the vast majority of which did not receive root canal treatment. They are doing fine years later, thank you.
