Re: full mouth extraction and immediate full dentures

Posted by vendela on 9/15/2009, 10:13 am, in reply to "full mouth extraction and immediate full dentures"

    Hi.
I got full dentures in dec 2005 when I was 18 due to a genetic defect which made my teeth get thin and chip. The dentist recommended me to have them all pulled now whe the bone was so good.
It is really a shock to get the message even though I knew I would end up with dentures early but not this early.
What I can say is that I agree fully with Barbara. The diagnosis has been conlcluded and now it is to work up a positive motivation because that is very important.
I was told all that I was going to experience after the extractions and that helped me very much.
The main thing is to understand that there will be a discomfort period after the extractions. The time will seem to stand still as I wanted to have the healing much faster, but the nature is here fixed. It takes time . about a week till you have the stitches out (if sutured). Then the gums will heal quite good and every day will be a little step in the right direction.
Do not think you can go directly on the beef but accept to have soft food and try and see how hard you can chew after about 2 weeks. Eating will really be better for every day.
Talking will seem difficult for some, but after some few days it will improve very much and do read load that will help a faster improvement.

Your voice will for you sound different, but that is only for you as the plastic cover a large part of the tissue and the normal vibrations from the voice propagates different through you head to the ears when having dentures. So other people will nothear any difference.

There might come sore spots on the gums because they are slightly different after the bending of the teeth when they were extracted and the gums are then slightly different than when the impressions were made. But go to the dentisimmediately you feel something is coming up because it is very easy for him/her to adjust the dentures . The dentures will be looser quite fast and then you have to have a reline. This is because of shrinking of the gums which is normal. This shrinking is fast the first weeks then slower till about 3 months. After a year they have normally stabilized and there will be very little shrinking after that.

Val, I can tell you that getting full dentures was way less problematic than I anticipated because I thought it would be really great problems. This is of course different for different people all after how traumatic the extractions are, but you said that it should be quite straight forward. Extractions were no problem for meand they are nothing to worry about any pain or so.

Now after these years I am now 22and love my dentures. They feel very normal to me and they also have their avantages, lol. Much easier to brush and keep clean.
when it comes to dating I was shivering the first times. But that went good too. Be straight with a potential bf, but do not say I am xxx and have dentures the first date, lol. When it comes point you want to be closer ad have a relationsship it is time to tell him and remamber men that don't accept you for dentures would have been a problem anyway later. The main thing is that you have not changed your personality and character getting these choppers.

I wish you all luck and you will manage this well.
greetings from a very happy denture wearer
    Vendela
