composite resin fillings failing.. is my dentist at fault?
Posted by shan on 10/3/2009, 11:06 pm
I am 25 years old. I have some composite resin fillings, all of which were done over the past 2 to 3 1/2 years. Immediately after two of them were put in I noticed a problem; every time I flossed the floss would get caught on the fillings and I wouldn't be able to get it out. I mentioned the fillings to the dental assistant, she tried to floss and had the same problem, and I was told that they needed to be fixed. We talked about it and she agreed that I shouldn't have to pay to get them fixed because I had just had them done a couple of months before, and she made a note of that on my chart. When I went in to have another tooth filled and get the two fillings fixed they only put in the new filling and said that there was nothing in my chart about the old fillings. I had to wait until my next six month check up to mention the fillings again. I went into my appointment expecting to get my old composite resin fillings replaced with new composite resin ones (and not having to pay full price), but my dentist said that there was decay between my fillings and teeth because of the spaces that the floss was getting stuck in, so he was going to replace them with amalgam fillings. He also said that composite resin fillings don't last very long, make it harder to spot decay, and are inferior to amalgam fillings (which I had never heard before). I ended up paying twice for the same two teeth to be filled, once with composite resin and once with amalgam (full price). Both of those composite resin fillings were less than two years old. It has been a couple of months since I got those fillings fixed, and today one of my other composite resin fillings just fell out of my tooth and left a big hole there. I don't eat rocks, so I don't think this sort of thing should happen. I feel like the dentists in my dental office don't know how to properly do composite resin fillings (I've had them done by three different dentists there). The first time I had one done the dental assistant had to stop the dentist and tell him that he wasn't going through the steps in the correct order.
I'm really disappointed in my dental office. I feel like I've been screwed, and I don't want it to happen again. I don't feel like I should have to pay to get this filling fixed. I don't want to have to pay twice for every filling in my mouth! I need your opinions. Please help me! Is this something that is normal, something that regularly happens to this kind of filling, or is there something wrong with my dentist? What is the exact argument I should use if you don't think I should have to pay (using dental terms please)? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
