Looking for info on choosing a Cosmetic Dentist?
immediate uppers - so afraid!!!!!
Posted by Chellie on 10/16/2009, 12:25 pm
I've been lurking on this board for a couple of year now, knowing the inevitable would finally happen. After not going to the dentist for many years, I finally went to a dentist I'd been thinking of going to for a while, went in September and was advised by him and the periodentist he referred me to that I must have all upper teeth and my lower molars extracted. Found an oral surgeon who will sedate me, my immediate uppers are all manufactured, sitting at the dentist's office and ready to go and I'm scared to death!!!!! I can’t stop crying, I'm avoiding the calls from my dentist's nurses to set my extraction appointment, I'm a mess. I know many have been through much, much more but I'm terrified. The worst part isn’t necessarily the new "teeth" (which should look far better than my shifted, tetracycline stained teeth with 20+ year old veneers with the original teeth showing on top) but the fact that my teeth will come out of my mouth now! I am so scared and probably just a big baby but I don’t want to go through with this!!!! What will it be like in the weeks after my extractions and immediates? Are they going to fall out? I can’t even imagine seeing myself with no upper teeth, even though my teeth look absolutely bad now and I hate it when people see them and slowly react to them. I went to the dentists last week to see the teeth in the wax mold thingy and it was like I was completely removed from the situation. The denture looked nice but I just sat there like, yeah, those are teeth alright! It just did not compute. Now, I'm wondering if I chose the right dentist, even though he seems reputable, has been in practice for many years, is very, very kind and his staff speaks very highly of him (of course they would) even one of his techs who’s worked for him for 35 years called him a "saint." I'm not even sure if he does a lot of dentures, although it’s too late now - teeth are paid for all but a few hundred dollars. Sorry for the rant - I am just terrified. I need the strength to call the office and set my appointments. What will happen if they need adjusting? Will he just do it in the office and I wait? Does it matter that he;s a general dentist and not a denturist when it comes to adjustments in office? I can't be without teeth. All questions to ask them when I finally gather up the courage to make that call, I guess.
