The problem with it could be that quite often, when they remove an old crown (or bridge, in your case), they usually have to remove a little bit of tooth enamel to get rid of any decay that could have started during that time,so then you get into possibly needing a root canal, more problems, etc. Of course, the other side of the coin is that they might discover some decay that had it gone on for a longer period of time, would have ended rotting out a tooth and causing you bigger problems later on. If your teeth are covered in metal underneath the crowns (good chance since they're so old, and I don't think they were doing all porcelain back then), any decay can go undetected. It could actually be a good thing to change them now.
