Re: found out the cost of implants, help

If you haven't already done so, Camryn — look for a second , third or even fourth opinion.

That estimate sounds pretty high to me.

I live in SoCal, and in 2003 I paid the identical amount for one extraction . . . one implant . . . a lab-made temp . . . a permanent implant crown PLUS a replacement crown and optional new ones for the three adjacent teeth . . . plus extensive after-care during the healing process!!!

I received a generous discount from my dentist for paying the full amount up front (by taking out a zero interest loan from CareCredit and moving the equivalent amount from my savings account out of my reach into 1-year CD to draw interest, while I paid off the loan in monthly installments within the required time frame). I felt the financial "pinch," of course, but also felt it was worth it, because the interest amounted to a "second discount."

Even not counting the earned interest, if I recall correctly, the total cost of just my implant was around $3,500. That's why — even allowing for inflation — the estimate your received sounds high to me.

If you can't find a dentist in the Bay area who will provide one for a comparable fee and are up to a little travel, you could always check with the dentist who provided mine.

The initial consultation (including x-rays) was free of charge . . . and because I wanted an immediate-loading implant) for which he took impressions (for the temp) the day I agreed to have the work done, the extraction, placement of the implant and crown plus all other work was completed during the second office visit. I returned 2-3 more times at weekly intervals so he could monitor the work, by which time, the site was ready to receive the permanent crown.

By the way, although he specializes in implants, he also offers multidisciplinary services to patients of all ages . . . and while in the waiting room I've noticed that many are seniors receiving implants, implanted-supported dentures an other cosmetic work. I'm no spring chicken myself, but have always found him to be watchful of my general dental health . . . caring . . . skillful . . . and never too busy to listen to my concerns or answer questions.

But if the idea of travel doesn't interest you, since he is active in "dental circles," he probably could arrange for a colleague in your neck of the woods to provide after care, as well.
