Looking for info on choosing a Cosmetic Dentist?

Hi Barbara,
I was just looking at some previous postings re dentures/implants, and came upon this posting of yours, in response to an implant supported over-denture:
"... you can ask about having a couple of posts put in that your denture will clip onto and be more stable. They do not cost anywhere near what full implants cost and do a good job.."
It seems like for every question I get answered, a dozen more take it's place. May I ask what a "post" is, and how it could be substituted for an implant? I recall in the "old days" lol, that a "post" was something constructed on top of drilled out tooth, that usually had a root canal. And as I recall, were rarely used because they were hardly strong enough to support even a single crown without breaking.
Is this the procedure you're referring to in order to support (presumably) an over-denture? And if so, is it the same old "post" I'm thinking about, or is this something new/improved for people with or without teeth?
It would be wonderful to avoid the outrageous cost of implants!
Sorry to continually burden you with my silly questions. You really should open a consulting firm. ;-)
Thanks again!
D
