POST & CORE Questions ( crown came off )

Does anyone know the cost of a post & core procedure and how long it takes to complete ? My crown fell off and Im miserable until I see a dentist , but i was told by my periodontist I might need to get a root canal , post to build up the tooth before a crown can be placed . Is this nornmal procedure if a crown can not pet placed back on ? thank , im worried and any advice is greatly appreciated , thank you
