Looking for info on choosing a Cosmetic Dentist?

I had in infected tooth removed (2nd molar from back on bottom). It was a horrendous recovery. Anyway, I have decided that I don't really want the implant. I have learned to live with the missing tooth. I did have an impression taken for the tooth. Do I have to go through with the implant? It is going to cost me $1800 and I just don't have that money. Will my dentist tell me that I still owe that money if I change my mind about having the implant?
