Looking for info on choosing a Cosmetic Dentist?

I don't think the kind of pain and throbbing you described is particularly unusual, Jean . . .though 6 weeks does seem like a long time to live with it.
Though your dentist inspected the site and did not find an infection, since your message states "this was happening well before losing my tooth," it might be worth having him take another look at it — if only to rule out a pre-existing problem.
If I remember correctly, you have written before that you also try to avoid x-rays. Still, unless you have had one recently, an x-ray now that the tooth is gone might shed more light on the source of the problem.
It's possible the site and surrounding tissue are still just recovering from the trauma; or maybe an infection has started to brew since the extraction that was not visible before.
If so, as Cathy suggested, a round of antibiotics might be helpful . . .or if the pain is limited to the gum, maybe a product like Anbisol or even ice (commonly used when our kids were cutting their first teeth) would work.
By the way . . . just out of curiosity . . . since your schedule includes a 3-month wait between the tooth extraction and implant procedure, is your dentist planning to do a bone graft?
When I received my implant the dentist used a synthetic product, which he placed into the socket immediately while it was still open. In my case, since the implant device and temporary crown were placed at the same time, it's easy to understand why; but since your implant procedure is different, but if it also includes bone grafting at some point, maybe timing of that step is a contributing factor in your discomfort. Then again, since your discomfort predated the extraction, even if bone product already has been added, it might be unrelated.
