Do I need a referral from dentist to go see an oral surgeon?

I have a pretty bad cavity and would like it taken out. After looking for an eternity I have found the perfect oral surgeon but do I need to have a referral to see him? I really don't want to waste time and money to go the dentist if I don't have too. Any advice about that? ___________________ miami denttist
